Our Story
A restored listed monument from 1760.
One of the oldest preserved farmhouses in Friesland.
De Buwepleats dates from 1760 and stands on the site of a 12th-century monastery estate. The traces of the past are still visible and tangible: the original Harlingen tiles, the hewn beams and the baroque cabinet wall make the history of the place palpable.
The farmhouse lies in the characteristic hedgerow landscape of De WΓ’lden, where woodland banks, borders and open fields alternate. An intimate, almost still surroundings.
Inspiration, attention and connection
In 2011 I left Wageningen for Drogeham. After an extensive renovation I now enjoy the farmhouse and its surrounding garden every day. You'll often find me in and around the house β in the garden, among the antique ceramics, or in the kitchen where I prepare something delicious with care. This place gives me peace and inspiration, and I'm happy to share that space with others.
Until 2020 I worked for 35 years as an art teacher in secondary education. In those years I gained a great deal of experience working with young people and together with colleagues. What drives me is discovering new possibilities and working together on development. I give that my full attention. That same attention is the foundation of De Buwepleats: attention to atmosphere, to food and drink, and above all to you as a person.
My dream is that De Buwepleats is an inspiring place where people meet, share ideas and knowledge, and where something beautiful can arise from that connection.
A place to stay together.
In the seclusion of a monastery garden you catch your breath. At the centre are the herb beds, surrounded by box hedges. As well as their medicinal properties, herbs such as sage, chives and poppy also provide a delightful spectacle. Roses and other ornamental flowers also find their place, because the monastery garden has always had an educational function and therefore contains a variety of plants.
The plants stand grouped by species. A kitchen garden and fruit trees are also present in this monastery garden. The same goes for the seating areas, which after working or walking offer a place for rest, reflection and meditation β or a delicious lunch. Enjoy.
